Kings and Queens:
- Standard address: "Your Grace"
- Informal/fealty-implying: "my king" / "my queen" (Note: implies you owe them loyalty — a Free Cities merchant would not use this)
- Also acceptable: "Sire" (for a king)
- Do not address them directly as "King [Name]" or "Queen [Name]" while speaking to them — only use that form when speaking about them to others
Princes and Princesses
-
The title belongs to the children and siblings of a ruling monarch. Beyond that immediate circle, it is not automatic by Targaryen blood alone.
-
Those of royal blood who fall outside that circle are addressed as lords and ladies unless elevated by proximity to the succession. This occurred with Baela and Rhaena when the question of succession was raised regarding Aegon III's lack of wife and heirs.
-
"Your Grace" — acceptable, but typically reserved for when no king or queen is present. In the presence of the monarch, use "my prince" / "my princess" or "Prince [Name]" / "Princess [Name]" to avoid ambiguity.
-
"my prince" / "my princess"
-
"Prince [Name]" / "Princess [Name]"
-
Foreign princes/princesses: use "my lord" / "my lady"
-
Dornish princes/princesses generally avoid "Your Grace" even among their own people
Nobility
Lords & Ruling Ladies
- "Lord [Name]" / "Lady [Name]"
- "Lord [House]" / "Lady [House]" — only for the ruling head of a house
- "my lord of [House]" — common when acting on their behalf (e.g. "I come at the behest of my lord of Kenning")
- "my lord of [Seat]" — e.g. "my lord of Highgarden" - They are NOT addressed as their seat directly (Eddard Stark is not called "Winterfell")
Non-Ruling Male Members of Noble Houses
- "my lord" or "my lord of [House]"
- Even knights may receive "my lord" if they head a knightly house
Noble Women (Non-Ruling)
- Addressed with "lady" (lowercase when standalone)
- "Lady [Name]" is correct
- Not"Lady [House]" — that implies she is a ruling lady or the wife of one
Knights:
- "Ser [Name]" — capitalized only when the name follows
- "ser" — standalone, lowercase
- A group of knights: "sers" (never capitalized)
- May also be addressed as "my lord of [House]"
Religious Titles:
Maesters, Archmaesters, Septons, Septas
- Addressed simply by their title: "Maester," "Archmaester," "Septon," "Septa"
Grand Maester
- "Grand Maester" (preferred)
- "Maester" is acceptable informally
The High Septon
- Referred to as: "His High Holiness"
- Addressed as: "Your Holiness"
- His birth name is never used or acknowledged once he takes the office
Commoners:
- Superiors typically use their given name alone
- Polite address: "goodman" / "goodwoman" (capitalized if name follows: "Goodman Pate")
- Guild craftmasters (armorer, smith, etc.): "master" (capitalized if name follows: "Master Mott")
