Note: You automatically begin with the language associated with your heritage which will mostly likely be the common tongue. Any subsequent languages require at least a 14 in Intelligence and sufficient support in your background to explain knowledge of an additional language.

Common Tongue: The language used throughout Westeros, consisting of minor variations and regional accents but understandable in all Westerosi regions.

Old Tongue: The language of the First Men. It is only remembered by giants and some free folk beyond the Wall. The language must have been learned from one such person to be understood in character, and is permitted by admin approval only.

High Valyrian: The language of the old Valyrian Freehold. Someone fluent in High Valyrian can understand and communicate in Low Valyrian well enough. Fluency in High Valyrian is limited to Valyrian houses and Maesters with the languages link of their chain. Some nobles may have received instruction in the language as part of a refined education, but they would have limited conversational ability, prioritizing the reading of inscriptions or old texts, or a general knowledge of formal phrases.

Low Valyrian: Bastardizations of High Valyrian used across various regions of Essos, namely, the Free Cities.

  • Braavosi: The language of Braavos

  • Lorathi: The language of Lorath

  • Pentoshi: The language of Pentos

  • Norvoshi: The language of Norvos

  • Qohorik: The language of Qohor

  • Volantene: The language of Volantis

  • Lysene: The language of Lys

  • Myrish: The language of Myr

  • Tyroshi: The language of Tyrosh

Ghiscari: A largely extinct tongue spoken five thousand years ago by the people of the Old Empire of Ghis, which was destroyed by the Valyrian Freehold. Pure Ghiscari was supplanted by a blend with High Valyrian, though engraved Ghiscari glyphs can still be found on old objects. The following are the surviving blended forms in the cities of Slavers' Bay:

  • Astapori: The language of Astapor

  • Yunkish: The language of Yunkai

  • Meereenese: The language of Meereen

Rhoynish: The language of the Rhoynar. Largely displaced by the Common Tongue following the Rhoynar migration to Dorne, it survives among the Orphans of the Greenblood, who maintain their ancestral language and traditions along the Greenblood river.

Dothraki: The language of the Dothraki people of the Dothraki Sea. Only characters who have had prolonged and specific reason to interact with the Dothraki would know this language, such as Maesters with the languages link of their chain.

The Summer Tongue: The language used by people from the Summer Isles
